In previous lessons you learned to play the first major scale pattern and discovered how to use it to make melodies. You then explored the pattern further by playing it in thirds and using random manipulation. You’re now ready to create your own repeating patterns within the scale patterns.
Like other forms of scale manipulation, practicing repeated patterns will help to saturate your knowledge of the scale pattern, improve your technique and connect your ear to the fretboard. In addition, this type of scale manipulation will offer you an opportunity to be musically creative!
To begin, learn and practice the following simple 3 – and 4 – note patterns. The scale degree numbers are written below the notes and the patterns are all notated in scale pattern #1. Try using them on scale pattern #2 or any other pattern that you may know, as well. Once you have mastered a few patterns you will be ready to create your own. The possibilities are endless!
