Use the chord shapes on this page and the next to find the chords you want. All you have to do is target the root of the chord on the appropriate string and form the correct shape. For example, the first chord is a C, because the root of that shape is on the first string and C is on the 8th fret of that string.

Chords on the First String Set

(Strings 1, 2, and 3)

Root on the First String

Think of the first position E and E minor shapes to find these chords. Flat the 5th of the minor chord to get a diminished chord. Here is the C scale, harmonized. (Note the fret numbers.)

C                  Dm                  Em                F                G                 Am                 Bdim.

Root on the Second String

Major chords in this group form the shape of a D chord; minor chords use the Dm shape. Flat the 5th of the minor chord to produce a diminished chord. Here is the harmonized C scale.

C                  Dm                  Em                F                G                 Am                 Bdim.

Root on the Third String

These shapes are from the first position A chord. As always, lowering the 5th of the minor chord produces a dimished chord. The harmonized C scale looks like this:

C                  Dm                  Em                F                G                 Am                 Bdim.
