I have been a guitar “strummer” for 50 years..and now that I have retired, and found I had more time to devote to playing. Soon, however, I wanted to expand beyond just playing chords and singing along with my popular songs repertoire.I had begun listening to more fingerstyle artists like Mississippi John Hurt, Etta Baker, Jorma Kaukonen, etc. & I wanted to find a way to play alternating bass-lines simultaneously with melodies.I began working on my own from a book I found with traditional tunes like Will the Circle be Unbroken, Freight Train, Frankie & Johnny, etc.
I submitted a video of Frankie & Johnny to Charlotte and she offered me great advice to make it more musical.
She advised keeping going in a way that allows the listener to know where they are with the melody. (The melody is at the top of the elements, so the musical elements, melody, harmony, and rhythm.) She said that the listener has to know the melody.
This piece has some measures of a series of 8th notes in which the melody is imbedded , so it can potentially get lost. One of the ways it gets lost is by the “melodic rhythm” being off. I will do better if I work with a metronome.
Among other things, she also recommended that I record the melody just by itself, and then play along with the recording to hear how to emphasize it.
This teaching has been very helpful. Charlotte was able to immediately zero in and identify the issues and then quickly reply with encouragement and expertise. I look forward to being able to use this resource in the future

I finally took advantage of Charlotte’s Single Song Support and it didn’t disappoint! Charlotte was able to glean an impressive amount of information from a simple audio recording. From identifying a potential setup issue to pointing out where I was leaving a chord early, I came away with a lot to work on. I think this type of input can be particularly useful if you are largely playing/learning on your own – I have a tendency to continue to make the same mistakes over and over and just accept them. It’s good to get a fresh and experienced set of ears on your playing.
Some of the points were pretty standard advice – go more slowly, practice some scales for the single note stuff, etc., but it never hurts to have that reinforced. And it wasn’t just a critical assessment – there was some positive feedback and words of encouragement about what I was doing right, and it definitely never hurts to hear that. I am going to follow up with a video recording – no doubt there will be some more detailed feedback to be had from that.
Highly recommended!

If you need some help with a song but aren’t in a position to schedule lessons, Charlotte’s single song support is a great option! It’s so quick and easy! I was stuck in a rut on a song I had been practicing a lot, but didn’t really know how to make it better. I sent Charlotte a video of my playing and quickly got personalized advice that was clear, specific, and encouraging. Charlotte included a list of actionable items to work on to improve my song, and links and references for further study to improve my technique, in both email and video format. I can reference them as I practice at my leisure, and, if I want, follow up with Charlotte when I’m ready. Charlotte’s upbeat, positive attitude, combined with her lifetime of expertise and teaching experience are invaluable. She can put your practice on the right path whenever and wherever you find yourself in need! I highly recommend her single song support! Five Stars!

Charlotte helped me with my cover version of Townes Van Zandt’s “Pancho and Lefty.” She diagnosed two places where I was rushing the melody and steered me to several great methods to improve my vocal tone and flow with this song.
In less than 12 hours, she listened carefully to my submitted video, noted key areas for improvement, and then sent me back a 5 minute video where she dissected my performance and offered suggestions for ways to improve my performance. She blended compliments on aspects where I shine with specific suggestions for improvements. She also sent me an email with links to short videos that address exercises and tools for improving my tonality. The email (and links for technique improvements) and custom video review are extremely complementary.
Charlotte gave me enough specifics that I’m excited to modify my normal ‘song acquisition’ method and become fully immersed in the songs I’m learning as I interpret the songs and make them my own. Her turnaround time is stunningly fast, and she offers extended coaching sessions beyond this tool to help build my stage performance skills. I recommend any guitarist struggling with a piece to tap into Charlotte’s experience and skill and take their performance skills to the next level!

Charlotte helped me with a cover of a John Denver song “Country Roads.” She was able to see things about my playing in the recording that I didn’t even realize. For example she could tell that I was playing in a key that wasn’t right for my voice. It’s easy to tell when something is too high for you, but she could see that I wasn’t hitting some of the lower notes. She recommended the exact capo placement that would work better, and it clearly made a difference. Additionally she sent me an article she wrote that was encouraging about changing keys and transposing. Transposing has always seemed intimidating, but Charlotte makes anything on the guitar seem doable, if with a bit of hard work, of course, and lots of fun! She also gave me ideas on how to add simple embellishments to the piece to flesh it out. Charlotte’s suggestions definitely made me feel more confident in my playing and prepared me to feel ready for an open mic. The song went from feeling routine to a fuller version. If you have any bit of a stuck point, or just want to enhance your piece, I highly recommend single song support!
