We have this book and the Getting Started. Both are excellent books. This book has so many great concepts, scales, note reading, etc. It has really helped my now 13 year old to progress. Also if you get a chance to take in person or skype lessons from Charlotte, do it. Ten out of ten, I would recommend to others.

Most people who have spent much time practicing guitar have had the feeling at one time or another of being “stuck”. This is a great book that can help you step back, refocus, and get out of just that kind of rut. This book is aimed at the beginner-intermediate guitarist (knowledge of how to play open chords is assumed, but not much else), although I’m confident more experienced guitarists, particularly those without much formal training, would benefit as well. The book covers quite a bit of ground, but the aim is really to help you develop an effective approach to practicing. The focus is on rhythm (often underestimated), barre chords, scales, and note reading (sort of a lost art for guitar players). Unlike a lot of guitar books out there, though, it has a very personal feel, and there are quite a bit of good pieces of advice and other tidbits to be found if you read carefully. Definitely recommended for anyone moving beyond the basics and wanting to get the most out of their practice time.

Not only do I love Charlotte Adams’ books, but I also love the author! I’ve been taking private guitar lessons with Charlotte since Sept 2015 and with only a few hours of teaching I really increased my music knowledge altogether. Her books are nothing different than her teaching approach in the sense that she goes straight to the essential. Each word is chosen carefully to keep complex concepts simple and easy to read which makes the book small yet so rich!! As a beginner, I ended up highlighting every single passage 🙂
I have not finished reading this particular book. I own 4 of 5 books from Charlotte. Her approach is “learn a little, practice a lot”. That said, it helped me to relax and learn accurately before starting something new.
The experience that Charlotte has is priceless. In the books she wrote, there are over 40 years of music teaching where she is sharing the best!
