David T Siegfried –
As I was thinking through how to describe Adams’ work, the two words that surfaced repeatedly in my mind were “Essential” and “Complete.” In Learning to Play Lead Guitar, Adams covers everything that is important for the guitar player just learning to solo, as well as the expert musician continuing to hone her or his craft and voice. Using a format and prose that is both concise and accessible, Adams takes a holistic approach to guiding the player along, clearly explaining the musical concepts and the technical approaches needed to internalize them, while also addressing the emotional, physical and psychological components involved in practice, creativity and performance. Unlike other guitar method books that provide deep yet narrow slices of information, Learning to Play Lead Guitar is informed not only by Adams’ career as a jazz performer, but also her lifetime of teaching music one-on-one, which allows her to provide the structure and context that is crucial for sustained learning, creativity and fun.
As a Berklee-trained guitarist, I have been exposed to many method books and teachers, some of them very good, but no other volume or guide so completely combines a singularly authoritative and compassionate teaching style with the essential musical and technical concepts one needs to develop as a guitar player and whole musician. I’ve been playing for 30 years and I continue to refer to this book as well as to Adams’ Guitar Player’s Guide to Music Theory when I revamp my practice routines… I highly recommend it!
